The home will be protected from resetting so gear is safe, but the rest of the vault will be dynamic with NPCs moving in on their own and refurbishing it without player intervention - a step back, perhaps, from normal Fallout 4 gameplay. After the enemies of the level have been dealt with, the player can have a place to call home, craft items and food, and store their gear. The story is told mostly through visual storytelling and the discovery of holotapes, journal snippets, and terminals in typical, modern Fallout fashion. When the player discovers it, they will have to turn on the power and lower the water level on one side in order to discover what happened to the residents and collect valuable loot. Vault 40 underwent a cataclysm approximately one hundred and fifty years after the gear doors shut.
